The Royal College of Occupational Therapists (RCOT) is the professional body that serves occupational therapists, students and support workers across the British Isles, including Ireland. Your membership provides professional indemnity insurance, continuing professional development (CPD) resources, access to specialist networks and sector representation. However, circumstances change. You may cancel because your employer now covers professional indemnity insurance, you have retired from practice, relocated, or found a more cost-effective standalone insurance provider. Yafee is here to walk you through your cancellation rights and the practical steps you need to take.
RCOT membership is open to qualified occupational therapists, newly qualified practitioners, students, self-employed therapists and those on career breaks or retired from the profession. Members domiciled in Ireland benefit from RCOT's professional indemnity cover for claims brought in Ireland up to £10 million (approximately EUR 11.8 million at current exchange rates). Your membership category determines your annual fee structure and the exact benefits you receive.
Irish occupational therapists typically cancel RCOT membership when employer-provided insurance cover removes the need for standalone cover, retirement from active practice makes membership unnecessary, or cost reduction becomes a priority during financial hardship. You might also cancel if you no longer attend CPD events, have found cheaper standalone professional indemnity insurance, or have relocated outside the profession. Understanding your actual use of member benefits helps you make a confident, informed decision.
Your RCOT membership cost depends on your membership category and payment method you choose. The following table shows the 2025/26 membership costs in GBP, which you can convert to EUR using your bank's current exchange rate for accurate budget planning.
| Membership category | Annual subscription (GBP) | Monthly direct debit (GBP) |
|---|---|---|
| Professional | £297.19 | £24.77 |
| Newly qualified | £223.02 | £18.59 |
| Self-employed | £223.02 | £18.59 |
| Overseas | £223.02 | £18.59 |
| Career break | £202.92 | £16.91 |
| Retired | £73.69 | £6.14 |
RCOT membership runs on an annual cycle from 1 October to 30 September each year. If you pay by monthly direct debit, RCOT collects your fee retrospectively on the last working day of each calendar month. Annual upfront payers do not save money compared to those who choose monthly instalments; both methods result in the same total annual cost. Choose whichever payment method suits your personal cash flow.
If you are self-employed and paying UK tax, a portion of your RCOT membership fee may qualify for tax relief. Check RCOT's tax relief guidance to calculate your true net cost after any allowable deduction. This calculation matters significantly when you are deciding whether to retain or cancel your membership.
Your RCOT membership typically includes professional indemnity insurance up to £10 million, access to CPD resources and a digital learning library, and automatic membership of specialist practice networks relevant to your field. These bundled benefits often cost considerably more if you purchase them separately from commercial insurers. If your employer reimburses professional fees or provides equivalent insurance cover, you may no longer need RCOT membership and should cancel to avoid unnecessary duplication.
As an Irish consumer, your cancellation rights are protected under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 and the Unfair Contract Terms Act 1977, both of which apply to membership contracts.
You have the statutory right to cancel RCOT membership at any time, provided you give the organisation written notice of your intention to cancel. The organisation must act on your cancellation request within a reasonable timeframe. In accordance with the Consumer Rights Act 2015, you are entitled to clear information about cancellation terms before you join and confirmation of your cancellation in writing. If RCOT fails to cancel your membership or continues to collect fees after you have submitted a valid cancellation request, you can lodge a complaint with the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC), the designated enforcement body for consumer law in Ireland. You may also pursue a claim through the Small Claims procedure if financial loss has occurred.
RCOT does not operate a statutory cooling-off period (14 days) for membership contracts because memberships are service contracts rather than distance contracts. Nevertheless, you retain the right to cancel at any time by providing written notice. RCOT's terms of service should specify a notice period (typically 30 days from the date they receive your written request). This notice period ensures the organisation can process your cancellation, stop collecting fees and update their membership records accurately.
Refund entitlement depends on the date your cancellation takes effect and whether you have paid for a full membership year upfront. If you cancel mid-year and have paid an annual fee upfront, RCOT should calculate a pro-rata refund based on the unused portion of your membership. For example, if you paid your annual fee on 1 October and cancel on 31 December, you are entitled to a refund covering the period from 31 December to 30 September (approximately nine months of unused membership). If you pay by monthly direct debit and cancel, no further payments will be collected from the date your cancellation takes effect, but you will not receive a refund for the current month's payment unless you cancel before that month's collection date.
The cancellation process is straightforward and takes no more than two weeks from submission to completion. Yafee has helped thousands of members understand exactly what to do at each stage.
Before you submit your cancellation request, collect the following information:
RCOT requires a written cancellation request. You can submit your request by email or postal letter. Your request must include:
Use plain, direct language. For example: "I hereby request cancellation of my RCOT membership with effect from [date], 30 days from the date of this letter. My membership number is [number]."
The quickest method is email submission. Address your cancellation request to RCOT's Membership team at [email protected]. Include "CANCELLATION REQUEST" in the subject line so the team prioritises your email. Paste your cancellation statement in the body of the email and attach a scanned copy of your membership card (front only; do not include sensitive banking details). RCOT's Membership team typically acknowledges email requests within 2 working days.
If you prefer to submit your request by post, send a printed letter (signed by you) to the following address:
Royal College of Occupational Therapists
Membership Team
106-114 Great Russell Street
London WC1B 3BT
United Kingdom
Post your letter by recorded delivery so you have proof of submission and a tracked delivery date. RCOT will process postal requests within 5 working days of receipt. Keep a copy of your letter and the recorded delivery receipt for your records.
RCOT should send you a cancellation confirmation email or letter within 3-5 working days of receiving your request. This confirmation will state the date your cancellation takes effect, your membership number and details of any refund due. Check this confirmation carefully. If you do not receive a response within 5 working days, contact RCOT's Membership team by telephone at +44 (0)20 3141 4600 (Monday to Friday, 09:00 to 17:00 GMT) to verify receipt.
If you pay by monthly direct debit, check your bank statement in the month after your cancellation takes effect to confirm that RCOT has stopped collecting fees. If a payment is taken after your cancellation date, contact RCOT immediately and request a refund. If RCOT does not refund the erroneous payment within 14 days, you can instruct your bank to reverse the direct debit and claim the money back under your bank's payment protection scheme. Yafee recommends you take a screenshot of your cancellation confirmation email and your bank statements showing the stop in payments for your records.
Once your cancellation is processed, your membership benefits end and your professional indemnity cover ceases at the effective cancellation date.
Your RCOT professional indemnity insurance cover (up to £10 million) terminates on the effective date of your cancellation. If you continue to work in occupational therapy or retain a clinical caseload, you must arrange replacement professional indemnity insurance immediately. Operating without valid cover exposes you to significant financial and legal risk. Contact a commercial insurance broker or check if your new employer provides cover before your RCOT cancellation takes effect.
Your access to RCOT's CPD resources, digital library and specialist networks ends on your cancellation date. Download or save any CPD certificates, resources or documents you may need for future professional registration or appraisal before that date. RCOT will deactivate your online account login credentials, so you cannot retrieve materials after your membership ends.
If you are entitled to a pro-rata refund, RCOT processes refunds within 28 days of your cancellation taking effect. The refund will be returned to the bank account from which your membership fees were paid (by direct debit reversal or bank transfer). If you do not see a refund within 28 days, contact RCOT's Membership team by email or phone and request confirmation of the refund status and expected date of credit.
Cancellations are rarely problematic if you follow the correct procedure, but a few preventable errors can delay the process or result in disputed charges.
Verbal requests and casual emails ("I think I want to cancel") are not sufficient. RCOT requires a formal written cancellation request that explicitly states your intention to cancel, your membership number and the effective date. Ambiguous requests may be forwarded to another department or placed in a queue. Use the exact wording: "I hereby request cancellation of my RCOT membership effective [date]."
RCOT's standard notice period is 30 days from the date they receive your written request. If you submit a cancellation request but specify an effective date fewer than 30 days away, RCOT may reject the request or extend the cancellation date automatically. Calculate your dates carefully. If you want to cancel immediately, contact RCOT by phone first to negotiate an earlier cancellation date, then follow up with a written request confirming that date.
Do not instruct your bank to cancel your direct debit to RCOT without first submitting a formal cancellation request to the organisation. If you cancel the direct debit without notifying RCOT, the organisation will not update your membership record and may pursue payment or terminate your membership for non-payment (which could affect your professional standing). Always submit your cancellation request to RCOT in writing, then cancel the direct debit only after you receive a cancellation confirmation from the organisation.
Your RCOT professional indemnity cover terminates on your cancellation date. If you continue any occupational therapy work, clinical practice or advisory role, you must have replacement cover in place before that date. Operating without insurance for even one day creates an uninsurable gap and exposes you to unlimited personal liability. Arrange replacement cover with a commercial insurer at least 14 days before your cancellation takes effect.
RCOT sends a written confirmation of your cancellation within 3-5 working days. This email includes your cancellation date, refund amount (if applicable) and confirmation that your professional indemnity cover ends. Save this email and check it carefully for accuracy. If the cancellation date is wrong or the refund amount is incorrect, contact RCOT immediately by email to request a correction.
RCOT's refund entitlement depends on your payment method and the date your cancellation takes effect within your membership year.
If you paid your annual membership fee upfront in one lump sum and cancel mid-year, you are entitled to a pro-rata refund. RCOT calculates the refund by dividing your annual fee by 365 days, then multiplying by the number of unused days remaining in your membership year. For example, if you paid £297.19 for professional membership on 1 October and cancel on 31 January (122 days into the membership year), you have used approximately 122 days and are entitled to a refund covering the remaining 243 days (£197.36 approximately). RCOT processes refunds within 28 days of your cancellation taking effect.
If you pay by monthly direct debit and cancel before the next collection date, no further payments are collected and no refund is due. RCOT collects fees on the last working day of each month. If you cancel on 15 January and the next collection date is 31 January, you will not be charged for February. If you cancel after the collection date has passed in that month, you will not receive a refund for that month's payment; RCOT treats the payment as final.
You do not need to request a refund separately. RCOT calculates and issues refunds automatically as part of the cancellation process. The refund is credited to the bank account from which your direct debit was taken, usually within 14-28 days of the cancellation taking effect. If you do not see the refund in your account after 30 days, contact RCOT's Membership team and provide your cancellation confirmation letter and bank account details. If RCOT fails to refund the money within 60 days of your cancellation date, you can file a complaint with the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC).
The following table compares your options when you no longer need RCOT membership and the financial impact of each choice.
| Option | Cost (annual) | Professional indemnity cover | CPD resources | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cancel RCOT and buy standalone insurance | £150-£220 insurance + self-funded CPD | Yes (commercial policy) | Must purchase separately | Cost reduction, employer CPD provision |
| Retain RCOT Professional membership | £297.19 | Yes (up to £10m) | Yes (included) | Active practitioners seeking bundled benefits |
| Switch to RCOT Retired membership | £73.69 | No cover included | Yes (included) | Retired therapists seeking CPD access only |
| Switch to RCOT Career Break membership | £202.92 | No cover included | Yes (included) | Temporary career pause, no active practice |
| Cancel and use employer insurance only | £0 | Yes (employer policy only) | Employer-funded access or none | Employed therapists with full cover elsewhere |
RCOT's legal obligation is to process valid cancellation requests. If the organisation refuses to cancel or continues to collect fees after your cancellation takes effect, you have clear legal remedies under Irish consumer law.
Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, RCOT must act on a valid written cancellation request within a reasonable timeframe (no more than 30 days from receipt). If the organisation fails to cancel your membership after you have submitted a proper written request, it is in breach of its contractual obligations. Furthermore, if RCOT continues to collect fees after your cancellation date, it is charging you for a service you have cancelled and may be committing unlawful direct debit collection.
If RCOT has taken a payment after your cancellation date or failed to process your cancellation request, send a formal written request for a refund to [email protected]. Your request should reference your cancellation request date, the email or letter in which you submitted it, and the erroneous charge. Ask RCOT to refund the amount within 14 days. Keep copies of all correspondence.
If RCOT does not refund erroneous payments within 14 days, contact your bank and request a chargeback or direct debit reversal. Explain that you submitted a valid cancellation request and RCOT continued to charge you without authority. Your bank can reverse the payments and recover the money on your behalf within 8 weeks of the disputed charge. This action does not prevent you from also lodging a complaint with the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC).
If RCOT refuses to cancel, continues to charge you after cancellation, or refuses to refund erroneous payments, you can file a formal complaint with the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC), Ireland's designated consumer enforcement authority. The CCPC investigates breaches of consumer law and can issue enforcement notices requiring RCOT to cease unlawful conduct. Yafee recommends you gather all written correspondence, bank statements showing disputed charges, and your cancellation confirmation before submitting your complaint. The CCPC accepts complaints online via www.ccpc.ie or by post. There is no fee for lodging a complaint, and the CCPC's investigation is free.
Use this checklist to ensure you have completed all necessary steps before your cancellation takes effect.
Cancelling your RCOT membership is a straightforward process when you follow the correct procedure. You must submit a formal written cancellation request (by email or post) at least 30 days before your desired cancellation date. RCOT will process your request within 5 working days of receipt, send you a cancellation confirmation email, and calculate any pro-rata refund due. If you have paid an annual fee upfront, you are entitled to a refund covering the unused portion of your membership year. Your professional indemnity cover ceases on your cancellation date, so you must arrange replacement insurance before that date if you continue any occupational therapy work. If RCOT refuses to cancel, continues to charge you after cancellation, or refuses to refund erroneous payments, you can file a complaint with the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC), the designated consumer enforcement body in Ireland.
Yafee has guided thousands of Irish occupational therapists through the cancellation process and has helped members recover erroneous charges when RCOT has failed to process cancellations correctly. The legal framework protecting your right to cancel is clear and enforceable. Follow the steps outlined above, retain all written confirmation, and escalate to the CCPC if RCOT fails to honour your cancellation request. Your consumer rights are backed by Irish law, and Yafee is here to help you understand and enforce them.
