Shop Pay is Shopify's fast checkout system that stores your card details, billing address, and payment methods across Shopify-powered online retailers. It also offers Shop Pay Installments, a buy-now-pay-later product that lets you split purchases into four interest-free weekly payments or longer-term loan schedules underwritten by third-party lenders. Many Irish consumers encounter Shop Pay at checkout without consciously creating an account. If you want to stop using it-whether for privacy concerns, to remove stored payment data, or because you have found an alternative payment method-you need to know exactly how to delete your account and what happens to your personal information afterward. At Yafee, we help you understand your cancellation rights under Irish consumer law and walk you through every step so you stay in control of your data.
When you shop at any Shopify-powered store in Ireland, you see a Shop Pay button at checkout. Clicking it saves your payment details and speeds up future purchases across other Shopify retailers. Shop Pay Installments lets eligible Irish shoppers split purchases into four weekly payments at no interest, or into longer instalment plans. The convenience comes with a trade-off: Shopify stores your card data, billing address, and purchase history in a centralised account linked across multiple merchants. If you want that data deleted or simply want to stop using Shop Pay, you must actively opt out. Your account and all linked data will be permanently removed when you delete it, and you will no longer see the Shop Pay button at checkout.
Irish shoppers delete Shop Pay for several reasons. Privacy concerns rank highest-many prefer not to have their payment methods and addresses held across multiple retailers on Shopify's unified network. Others find they no longer shop on Shopify stores regularly and see no value in keeping the account active. Some users discover they were charged unexpectedly through an instalment plan or felt pressured by "prequalification" banners at checkout. If you have had a poor experience with refunds on instalment purchases, or if a merchant refused a refund and blamed Shop Pay's terms, you may want to delete your account entirely and handle payments yourself. Yafee empowers you to make that choice with confidence and clarity.
Ireland's Consumer Rights Act 2015, as amended by the Consumer Rights (Amendment) Regulations 2022, grants you strong protections when you cancel digital services and payment accounts.
You have the right to terminate your Shop Pay account at any time without penalty or justification. Under the Data Protection Act 2018 and GDPR, you can also request deletion of all personal data-including saved addresses, payment card details, and purchase history. Shopify is legally required to confirm deletion within 30 days of your request. If you do not receive written confirmation that your account and data have been deleted, contact the Data Protection Commissioner (DPC) in Dublin. Yafee recommends keeping a copy of your deletion confirmation email for your records.
Your legal position: Once you delete your Shop Pay account, Shopify must erase your payment data and stop processing any future transactions through that account. You retain the right to request confirmation of deletion at no cost. If Shopify fails to comply within 30 days, you can file a complaint with the Data Protection Commissioner.
If you purchased items through Shop Pay Installments and later changed your mind, you have a 14-day cooling-off period from the date of purchase to cancel your order and receive a full refund. This right applies to all distance contracts under Irish consumer law. The instalment loan itself is a separate financial product, and cancellation of the purchase must trigger full reversal of the loan and refund of any payments you have made. If a merchant refuses to refund or if Shop Pay or the lender disputes your refund, you can escalate to the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) in Dublin at no cost. Yafee recommends keeping all transaction confirmations and email correspondence so you have proof of your purchase date and cancellation request.
You can delete your Shop Pay account via the Shop app or through a web browser; the process is straightforward and takes fewer than 5 minutes.
Deleting your Shop Pay account does NOT automatically delete your accounts at individual Shopify stores where you have made purchases. If you have created separate user accounts at specific Shopify merchants, you must delete those accounts directly with each store. Shopify retailers maintain their own customer records independent of your Shop Pay account. Yafee recommends reviewing your purchase history in the Shop app before deletion so you know which merchants hold your data separately.
Deletion is permanent and affects your shopping experience immediately.
Within 24 hours of confirming deletion, your Shop Pay account will be removed from Shopify's systems. The Shop Pay button will no longer appear at checkout on any Shopify store. Any active instalment payment plans will continue under the lender's agreement-deletion of your Shop Pay account does not cancel existing loans. You will need to manage those payments through the lender's own portal or mobile app. Your purchase history will be deleted from the Shop app, though individual merchants may retain their own records of your purchases for their legal and tax obligations.
Shopify will erase your payment card details, billing address, email address, and phone number from the Shop Pay system. However, Shopify may retain anonymised or aggregated data for statistical purposes, as permitted by GDPR. If you have concerns about what data Shopify has retained, you can file a Subject Access Request (SAR) with the DPC. Yafee recommends submitting your SAR within 30 days of account deletion so Shopify can confirm exactly what information it has removed.
You can recreate a Shop Pay account at any time by signing up again at a Shopify store checkout or via the Shop app. Your deletion request is permanent only for that account; creating a new one is treated as a fresh sign-up. All previous payment methods and addresses will not be automatically imported.
Shop Pay Installments are treated as separate financial products, and your cancellation rights depend on whether you are cancelling the goods purchase or the loan itself.
If you bought items through Shop Pay Installments and want to return them, you have 14 days from the purchase date to cancel the order and request a full refund. This right applies to all online distance purchases under the Consumer Rights Act 2015. To cancel:
If the merchant claims they cannot refund because of Shop Pay's terms, that claim is incorrect. The merchant is responsible for honouring the 14-day cooling-off period regardless of the payment method. If the merchant refuses to refund after 14 days, you can escalate to the CCPC, which has enforcement authority over consumer protection breaches in Ireland. Yafee recommends submitting a complaint to the CCPC with copies of your purchase confirmation, cancellation request email, and the merchant's refusal response.
If you want to cancel an instalment plan that is already in progress (after the 14-day cooling-off period), you must contact the third-party lender directly. Shop Pay Installments are often underwritten by lenders such as Klarna or PayPal Credit. You can find the lender's details on your instalment agreement or invoice. Early cancellation may incur a fee depending on the lender's terms. Contact Yafee if you need help identifying your lender or understanding your cancellation options.
Shop Pay itself is free to use; Shopify does not charge you a subscription or membership fee to store your payment details or access the Shop app.
| Payment method | Cost to you | Data storage | Buy-now-pay-later option |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shop Pay | Free | Centralised across Shopify stores | Yes, 4 interest-free instalments |
| Debit or credit card (direct) | Free (no BNPL) | Stored by each merchant individually | No |
| PayPal | Free (fees apply to sellers, not buyers) | Centralised in PayPal account | Yes, via PayPal Credit |
| Google Pay | Free | Encrypted by Google | No (payment method only) |
| Apple Pay | Free | Encrypted by Apple | No (payment method only) |
| Klarna standalone | Free (interest-free instalments); late fees apply | Centralised in Klarna account | Yes, multiple plan options |
If you delete Shop Pay but want to use buy-now-pay-later services, you can register directly with Klarna, Clearpay, or PayPal Credit instead. These services do not require you to delete Shop Pay first; you can use both simultaneously. Yafee recommends comparing which instalment providers are accepted at your favourite Shopify stores before deciding to delete Shop Pay.
Deleting your account is safe and straightforward, but a few pitfalls can cause frustration if you do not plan ahead.
Your Shop Pay account deletion does NOT cancel any active instalment loans. If you have ongoing Shop Pay Installments payments, they will continue to be charged by the third-party lender even after you delete your account. You must cancel those loans separately by contacting the lender directly. Failure to do so will result in continued charges and potential late-payment penalties. Check your current instalment agreements before deleting your account, and contact the lender to confirm cancellation if you no longer wish to pay.
If you are waiting for a refund on a cancelled purchase, do not delete your Shop Pay account until that refund has been processed and credited to your payment method. Deletion removes your account history, making it harder to dispute the refund if the merchant claims it was not made. Keep screenshots of your refund confirmation and bank transaction records before you delete anything.
Shop Pay deletion does not delete your accounts at individual Shopify stores. If you have created a user profile at a specific Shopify retailer and saved your payment details there separately, you must delete that account directly with that merchant. Yafee recommends reviewing your purchase history in the Shop app and identifying which stores you have shopped at most frequently, then visiting those sites to delete your accounts if you wish to fully remove your data.
Do not assume your account is deleted just because you clicked the delete button. Shopify sends a confirmation email within 24 hours; if you do not receive it, contact Shopify support immediately. Without confirmation, you cannot be certain your data has been erased, and you may have difficulty proving deletion if a dispute later arises with a merchant or lender.
After you submit your deletion request, verify that it has been processed correctly.
Shopify will send a confirmation email to the address registered with your Shop Pay account within 24 hours. Check your inbox, spam folder, and promotions folder. The email will confirm the date and time of deletion and what data has been removed. If you do not receive this email within 24 hours, visit https://shop.app/opt-out again and sign in to see the status of your deletion request.
Visit any Shopify store and try to use the Shop Pay button at checkout. Once your account is fully deleted, the button will either not appear or will prompt you to create a new account. If you see your old payment methods or addresses, your deletion may not have been completed. Contact Shopify support immediately with your deletion confirmation email.
Under GDPR, you can request written confirmation that Shopify has deleted all your personal data. Submit a formal Subject Access Request (SAR) to Shopify at their Data Protection Officer contact (available on their privacy page). Shopify must respond within 30 days and confirm what data has been erased. Keep this receipt for your records in case you need to prove deletion to a merchant or lender later.
Shopify is legally required to delete your account upon request, but processing delays or technical issues can occur.
If your deletion request has not been processed within 48 hours, contact Shopify Customer Support at help.shopify.com. Provide your email address and the date you submitted your deletion request. Ask for confirmation of deletion status and an estimated completion date. Keep a copy of all support correspondence.
If Shopify fails to delete your account within 30 days of your request, or if they refuse deletion without valid legal grounds, you can file a complaint with the Data Protection Commissioner (DPC) in Dublin. The DPC has enforcement authority under GDPR and can compel Shopify to comply. File your complaint at www.dataprotection.ie and attach copies of your deletion request, confirmation email (if received), and all support correspondence. The DPC will investigate at no cost to you. Yafee recommends filing this complaint within 90 days of your initial deletion request to preserve evidence.
If Shopify's refusal to delete violates the Consumer Rights Act 2015, you can also report the issue to the CCPC. The CCPC can investigate Shopify's conduct and pursue enforcement action if the company is breaching your consumer rights. Submit a complaint at www.ccpc.ie with copies of your deletion request and Shopify's response (or lack thereof).
